Focus and Presence are My Strengths
One of the things that’s important to me, and that I constantly practice, is being present and engaged in what I’m doing right here and now. This also means that when I’m at home with my husband and children, that’s what I’m focused on, and the roastery can just be the roastery for a while. Conversely, I also love to disconnect from family life and children and just be present in the roastery. It’s actually something I’ve always been good at. And dividing my day into compartments helps me stay focused. It helps me remove distracting elements and find calm, which is important for me to balance between family life and an ambitious entrepreneurial life. And I’m good at putting the phone away, which I think is really important.
An Unparalleled Adventure
There’s no doubt that if one of my girls wanted to start up as an independent entrepreneur, I would support them all the way. It’s an unparalleled adventure while also pushing you to the limit. The most important thing for me is that it’s my dream job, and I make a living from what I’m passionate about. One of the things I’ve learned along the way, sometimes the hard way, is the whole financial aspect of running a business. It’s just so important to have it under control from the start, and it’s better to pay for professional help than to make too many mistakes, because it’s just too expensive to learn that way. But no matter what, I will always support my girls and advise them to go for it, because it’s the most fantastic thing I’ve done.
Swallowing Camels
There’s no doubt that during the development of Holy Bean, I’ve also had to swallow some pride to build a healthy business. In the beginning, I was very set on how I wanted to do things, but later I learned and experienced that it’s important to listen and learn from others as well. It can be from your customers and the data and feedback you get, to find a compromise that allows your business to develop. After all, you need to roast a pretty large amount of coffee to make a profitable business, and it doesn’t help if we have a product that only a narrow part of the population likes. That’s why today we have a rather wide range of coffees that appeal to a large part of the population. But you still won’t find anything that’s dark roasted with us.
