Description of coffee's complex universe
The aroma wheel is used in the coffee industry as a tool to identify, describe, and communicate the complex aromas and flavor nuances of coffee. It helps us as baristas, roasters, and taste testers to describe the coffee more precisely and nuanced, which improves the customer experience and provides a deeper understanding of the coffee’s character. The aroma wheel is therefore an important part of our coffee development, quality assurance, and communication of coffee experiences.

At Holy Bean, we work consciously with the connection between taste and colors. That is, the color of our labels on the coffee bags visually emphasizes the coffee’s unique characteristics.
For example, if our coffee from Gasura has flavor notes of grapefruit and honey, we use a yellow-orange label. The yellowish color symbolizes freshness and acidity from the grapefruit, while the warmer glow over into the orange color symbolizes the sweetness from honey. Similarly, other flavor nuances – such as chocolate, nuts or berries – can match with natural colors such as brown, red or purple, which visually emphasizes the coffee’s characteristics. This color coding helps both baristas and customers to quickly identify and understand the coffee’s profile, and creates a strong visual connection between taste, aroma and aesthetics.
Collaborations and Partnerships
We engage in partnerships that focus on making a local difference in some way. This could be through cooperatives that help small farmers, promote women’s living conditions, or support children’s education by supporting school projects.
Women in coffee
At Holy Bean, several of our customers express that they can taste the more distinctive, feminine notes in our coffees rather than other coffees. An elegance and special finesse that is especially expressed in the fruity, floral and light notes that characterize our range. These bright, vibrant flavors give each cup a unique character — a true reflection of our passion and craftsmanship in the world of coffee.
With Care
When buying coffees, there are certain factors to consider if you want to shop responsibly. These can include certifications like organic, Rainforest Alliance, support for small farmers and women. It can be local projects that improve living conditions.
When you choose to buy a single estate coffee, we or our importer know the farm, cooperative, or washing station. This makes it easier to follow the coffee through the entire supply chain compared to single origin, which typically includes coffees from multiple locations.
By buying a hand-knitted hat, gloves, or sweater, you support female coffee producers in Burundi and Rwanda by ensuring them a stable year-round income.
When you choose high quality when buying coffee, farmers are also paid a higher average price for their coffees.
