Brewing guide
Cold brew, also known as cold-brewed coffee, is coffee that’s brewed and typically refrigerated, often overnight.
Because the coffee is brewed cold and over a longer period, the various flavor nuances become even more pronounced, such as fruity, floral, acidic, and sweet notes, while the bitter taste becomes less prominent.
As a starting point, we recommend African coffees for cold brew. Their fruity flavor profiles add a lovely freshness to the cold coffee drink.
Here, we’ve used the Hario cold brew bottle as a reference, but you can easily use a container and coffee filters for subsequent filtering.
You will need
01
Grind the coffee coarsely
Grind the coffee coarsely. Since it will be brewing for a longer time, it’s important to grind coarsely for a milder and more balanced flavor. If the coffee is ground too finely, too many bitter compounds will be extracted.
Then fill the bottle with 650 ml of cold, preferably filtered water. Pour the ground coffee into the funnel on the pitcher, and place it in the bottle, which is then refrigerated for 16-24 hours.
02
Don't forget the ice cubes
After 16-24 hours, you can take your coffee out of the refrigerator. The great thing about this bottle is that as soon as you’ve removed the filter from the bottle, your coffee is actually ready! You can serve it as is over a glass with ice cubes, add a few drops of citrus for more freshness, or a bit of milk for a creamier taste.
