From Addis Ababa to the Coffee Forests of Guji

Coffee Farm in Harmony with Nature

Getachew grew up in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, but when his father’s career took the family south, the lush mountain landscape of Guji became his new home. Here, his love for nature and coffee cultivation began to grow.

Deep in the forests of Guji lies Dimtu Tero, a 151-hectare coffee farm where Getachew now grows coffee with deep respect for nature. The farm is closely integrated with the surrounding natural forest environment, and organic production and care for nature are central to the way he manages the farm.

Getachew also works closely with local outgrowers, sharing his knowledge of coffee cultivation with them. Through this collaboration, he contributes to improving coffee quality in the region while supporting local coffee farmers.

His focus on quality, organic farming and nature has resulted in NOP, EU and JAS certifications.

Where Nature Shapes the Flavour

What Makes Coffee from Guji Special?

Guji is one of Ethiopia’s highland regions, where coffee is grown at altitudes of around 1,800–2,300 metres. The cool temperatures allow the coffee cherries to ripen slowly, helping to develop their natural sweetness and complex aromas. Together with the lush forests, nutrient-rich soils and diverse range of coffee varieties, this creates ideal conditions for coffee with a floral, fruity and tea-like character.

These qualities are clearly expressed in Dimtu Tero. Here, you’ll find a delicate and juicy cup with elegant notes of black tea, flowers, citrus and dried apricot. The combination gives the coffee a light yet complex character and reflects the distinctive qualities that coffee from Guji is known for.

The Culture of the Region

Coffee, Traditions and Ceremonies in Guji

Getachew remembers how his parents introduced him to a community with a strong coffee culture. In Guji, coffee is an integral part of local culture and holds a special place both in everyday life and in rituals and ceremonies.

“Coffee is a respected crop in the area where I came to live. The local community uses coffee in rituals and ceremonies, and it is also used to bless the traditional leader, Abba Gadaa,” explains Getachew.

Coffee is therefore about more than the drink itself. It plays an important role in social and ritual settings, where it is shared as a symbol of community, respect and hospitality. Through these traditions, coffee helps connect people and generations and remains an important part of life in Guji.
