Getachew grew up in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa, but when his father’s career took the family south, the beautiful mountain landscape of Guji became his new home. It was here that his love for nature and coffee farming began to grow.
Deep in the lush forests of Guji lies Dimtu Tero, a 151-hectare coffee farm where Getachew now grows coffee with great respect for nature. The farm blends almost seamlessly into the surrounding forest, and organic production and care for the natural environment are an important part of the way he runs the farm.
Getachew also works closely with local outgrowers, supporting them with knowledge and guidance on coffee cultivation. In this way, he helps strengthen the quality of coffee in the area while sharing his experience with local coffee farmers.
Getachew’s dedication to quality and nature has resulted in NOP, EU, and JAS organic certifications.
A Floral and Fruity World
Guji is one of Ethiopia’s highland regions, where coffee is grown at altitudes of around 1,800–2,300 metres. The cool temperatures and slow ripening of the coffee cherries help develop a high concentration of sugars and complex aromatic compounds. Together with the region’s lush forests, rich soils and great genetic diversity of coffee plants, this gives Guji coffee its distinctive floral, fruity and tea-like character.
These qualities are particularly evident in Dimtu Tero.
Where does this coffee fall on the flavor wheel?
Here, you’ll discover a juicy and delicate cup with notes of black tea, citrus and dried apricot, complemented by a beautiful floral aroma. The elegant freshness and fruity sweetness are exactly what make coffee from Dimtu Tero in the Guji region so distinctive. Coffee from Dimtu Tero offers a delicate cup with notes of black tea, citrus and dried apricot.
The Culture
Getachew remembers how his parents introduced him to a community with a strong coffee culture. In Guji, coffee is an important part of local culture and holds a special place both in everyday life and in rituals and ceremonies.
“Coffee is a respected crop in the area where I came to live. The local community uses coffee in rituals and ceremonies, and it is also used as a means of blessing the traditional leader, Abba Gadaa,” explains Getachew.
Coffee is therefore about more than the drink itself. It plays an important role in social and ritual settings, where it is shared as a symbol of community, respect and hospitality. Through these traditions, coffee helps connect people and generations and remains an important part of life in Guji.
